there is an packaging issue with DNN 4.4.0/4.4.1, that some additional .dll files are missing, therefore skins using the DNN tree (like the default skins with vertical oriented menu) do fail. either use skin with horizontal menu, modify the skin to use the vertical oriented Solpart menu or copy the missing .dll files from /bin folder of a previous package (e.g. DNN 4.3.7):

- DotNetNuke.DNNTreeNavigationProvider.dll
- DotNetNuke.ASP2MenuNavigationProvider.dll
- DotNetNuke.Caching.BroadcastPollingCachingProvider.dll
- DotNetNuke.Caching.BroadcastPollingCachingProvider.SQLDataProvider.dll
- DotNetNuke.DNNDropDownNavigationProvider.dll
- DotNetNuke.DNNMenuNavigationProvider.dll

That sounds good. But, how do I get back into the control panel if it keeps crashing ?

if you changed the skin for the complete portal, I suggest to edit the value directly in the portals table or copy the .dll files.
