The url to my dotnetnuke 4.4.1 installation on my PC is http://localhost/dotnetnuke/default.aspx.

On checking the links to register and login on the top right hand side, i notice that the urls are http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Register/Default.aspx and http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Login/Default.aspx respectively.

Now on checking the website folder in my dotnetnuke installation, i find that i dont even have a "Home" folder, thus the 2 pages above are not found.

During the initial installation there was no Home Directory so i guess its supposed to be created during the installation (pls correct me if i'm wrong)..i gave the NETWORK_SERVICE and ASPNET users the necessary permissions but it still aint working..

i've done this 4 times now...can anyone help?

the URL gets expanded by a URL rewriter that is adding navigation level names as "virtual" folders, as well as any parameters. If you disable "search engine friendly URL" in host settings, you will see the original urls like http://localhost/default.aspx?tabid=123

There are many concept / terminology in DotNetNuke. Such as Page/Tab, Portal (Parent and Child Portal), Friendly URL, ...

Link http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Register/Default.aspx is composed by Friendly URL (one of DotNetNuke's providers).

Look at tabid/36 :: tabid (page id ?) == 36

So, what about home ?
No, there is no "Home" Sub Directory.

Page/Tab and Child Portal

  • You can make Page/Tab, lets name it Community. May be its link is http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Community/tabid/987/Default.aspx
  • Now make Page/Tab Community (still same name) but this Parent Page is Home. May be its link is http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Home/Community/tabid/988/Default.aspx
Until this step, you will not find sub Directory dotnetnuke\Community or dotnetnuke\Home\Community

Lets try to access http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Community :: you will get an error.
  • Ok, now try to make Child Portal. Name it Community (still same name). May be its link is http://localhost/dotnetnuke/community/Home/tabid/989/Default.aspx
Cek in your Sub Directory. There is Folder name community :-)
  • Now lets try to access http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Community :: you will be redirect to http://localhost/dotnetnuke/community/Home/tabid/989/Default.aspx
Now you can access ::
  • http://localhost/dotnetnuke/Community/tabid/987/Default.aspx
  • http://localhost/dotnetnuke/community/Home/tabid/989/Default.aspx
same http://localhost/dotnetnuke/community but different tabid

you need to login as superuser, typically "host".
