We have good site rankings with Google and are about to migrate our existing sites in classic ASP to DNN.  Obviously we don't want to lose our hard-earned rankings.

Can anyone provide some advice on what we should and should not do in this transaitional phase.  Is it a matter of keeping existing pages in place until such time as Google recognises the DNN pages?

Hi Steve,

I don't think it would be a problem assuming you are going to have the same content on the pages and a similar layout? Maybe get the whole site up and running offline and ensure you have all the page fields filled in and similar content before going live? Also bear in mind that the Google Index will be pointing to pages that no longer exist, so you may want to set up redirects so the index does not get upset with broken pages. I would try and keep the same structure and layout if possible...

For the record, DNN lends itself very well to SEO (there are some caveats to this) - I am at number #1 for a lot of keywords for PokerDIY (and "poker" is a very hard term SEO-wise). Obviously I spent a lot of time on SEO but DNN made it very easy with it's architecture.

You risk losing ranking if your page names change suddenly  ...eg say you have a good ranking for "widgets" on your page widgets.asp, but when you change that page to widgets.aspx, google et al can treat this as a completely new page and give it the same low starting rank as any randow new page that suddenly appeared on the net with the keyword "widgets"
