10% sounds a bit high I think the number is closer to 5 based on marketshare.com.  I'll use 7%. Say you come up with a scheme where you can get a penny ($0.01) from every person you contact.  So you contact 1 million people.  You would collect $10,000.  Cool!  Then you find out it doesn't work for 7% of the people.  That means you would lose $700.  Would you focus on how to get a penny and a half (another $5,000) from each, or how to make it work for the lost 7% ($700).

There are lots of things in this world that don't work worth crap for left handed people (8-15% of the population) and lefties are nearly double the percentage of the population that Safari is of its group.  Many times it is just not worth it to chase after a small subset especially if there are options for that subset to join the main population.  It is always hard when you are in a small minority.  I live in Idaho.  Rarely if ever does a presidential candidate talk about Idaho voters as being key.  There just aren't enough of us to worry about.  That is just the way things work.

my 2 cents

mhj96813 - Thanks for showing me the way. Why on earth was I even thinking people should be concerned for the 5-7% of visitors to their DNN site for whom the FCK Editor will not work? Sure they're - pah! - only Mac users! Have they not seen the Windows way yet? What was I thinking??

Smart-faced comments aside, the reality is that a number of key contributors to my site are Mac / Safari users (and I am sure it is the case with many others) and the FCK Editor means they - for all intent and purposes - can no longer contribute to the site. So I am therefore forced to use the formatting toolbar free 'Text Box' as HTML Input Method to get their contributions. Far from ideal. FCK Editor is good but not without its problems. Some people (such as mhj96813) may not care about this problem. But there are others who do.

I didn't intend to dis Mac users.  They are like lefties, a small minority.  Since they choose to be in that minority they may have to deal with things that are less than ideal.  I’m not saying the windows way is better or worse, it is just more prevalent, therefore it will have fewer compatibility issues.  Your initial post talked about the percentage of users to any site. Now you are talking about the fact that you have key contributors you are concerned about. If you have key contributors that you need to help make it work for, then maybe you will have to write your own version of FCK.   Is it that important to you? My whole point is that you can’t expect companies to respond quickly to such a small segment of their audience. It takes effort and cost. It is often just not worth it for them when compared with other possible things they could work on. The payback isn’t there. Is it for you?
I drive a fiat and I live in Idaho.  That is my choice.  I have to accept the fact that parts are a bit harder to come by and they are more expensive.  That is part of the cost of having an itialian sports car in rural america.  I don't expect every mechanic to be able to work on it.   Oh but it is a fantastic car to drive.  The sound is incredible.  Of course I don't drive it in winter.  And as everyone knows Fiat stands for Fix It All the Time.
What happens when your mac users run the fck editor?  It may not be completely compatible, but maybe they can use it and avoid some features that are problematic.
Long live freedom of choice, and the consequences thereof
mj

You could shell out some bucks and buy a third party text editor from telrik or component art, or even cute editor. Perhaps they play well with a Mac. Also, Safari is a terrible browser IMO. I would instruct your users to download firefox (remember the Works Best in Netscape icons, lol). That's what we did to get around the problem. Your not optionless here.
