Help. This is new to me. I am setting up a new site which will have a membership section. People need to able to register online and upload their basic details. Then once registered to access pages that unregistered people can't reach.

Looking at DotNuke it seems it can do this but I am not certain.

I tried to set up a signup page in the online demo version but failed.

How do I do it?

Also looking at the download page I have no idea which version I need to download.

Sorry to be so dumb.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

you need to set the appropriate registration type in portal settings (e.g. verified, where the user needs to confirm the email address by clicking a link in an email he gets) and afterwards create the appropriate page with modules, setting page or module permissions not to be visible for users not logged in.

I recommend to use DNN 4.4.1 install package.
