You can do whatever you need to in development.  At any time you can change the status of a portal from child to parent and as long as all modules are programmed properly, there should be no difference aside from the URL.  Does this answer your question?

can you guide me in live hosting does this matters if i further create child portals of existing child portal of dnn default portal

like rite nw i have done work in http://localhost/DotNetNuke/mysite

firstly i want to make it parent like http://localhost/mysite

because in future i need to develop more child portals like

I am not 100% clear still on what you need help on, but here are a few things to start with:

At any time you can login as host and go to the Host -> Portals menu item.  This will list all ports of that DotNetNuke install.  Click on the edit pencil to see that portals specific details (basically its Site Settings).  All you need to do is add the proper alias to the list of aliases.  The reality is that there is no difference between a 'child' and a 'parent' portal.  A single portal, depending on aliases, could function as either one or both depending on your definition of 'parent/child'.  Looking at your example urls:

  • Making localhost/DotNetNuke/mysite into localhost/mysite is not possible unless you change the virtual directory name
  • In a hosted enviroment, you could easily add the alias of domain.com for this 'mysite'
  • In a hosted enviroment, you could then add child portals as domain.com/newsite which could then be 'promoted' to parent portals by adding a domain alias.

The other item is how it is setup in IIS, but its a bit to broad to start stating facts about IIS without understanding what you are trying to achieve.

In hosted environmentI added a new parent portal and gave it alias as www.mywebsite.com/myportal2

but when I try to access it in web browswer http://www.mywebsite.com/myportal2  then I get 404 error.

Where am I wrong?

Do I need to do anything on hosting side?

thanks in advance for your kind help.
