OK, I've looked around. I've read the doc (several times). I think the problems I'm running into surround permissions. Here's what I've done:

  1. Created a domain level user for running DNN
  2. Put DNN in a network share. The above user has write access to this folder
  3. Set up a website on another machine. Pointed the webiste at this share and told it to connect as the domain user
  4. (here's where it got tricky) Changed the app pool to not be the default one so that the website would start
  5. Gave the domain user write access to the Temp Asp.net directory on the web server

I'm now getting the following error:

[SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.]
   System.Web.Configuration.MetabaseServerConfig.MapPathCaching(String siteID, VirtualPath path) +3500426
   System.Web.Configuration.MetabaseServerConfig.System.Web.Configuration.IConfigMapPath.MapPath(String siteID, VirtualPath vpath) +9
   System.Web.Hosting.HostingEnvironment.MapPathActual(VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean permitNull) +163
   System.Web.CachedPathData.GetConfigPathData(String configPath) +382
   System.Web.CachedPathData.GetVirtualPathData(VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean permitPathsOutsideApp) +132
   System.Web.HttpContext.GetFilePathData() +27
   System.Web.HttpContext.GetConfigurationPathData() +26
   System.Web.Configuration.HttpCapabilitiesBase.GetBrowserCapabilities(HttpRequest request) +133
   System.Web.HttpRequest.get_Browser() +134
   System.Web.ErrorFormatter.RequiresAdaptiveErrorReporting(HttpContext context) +104

We're thinking it has to do with the file caching provider, but I'm not sure what permissions need to be set that I haven't.

HELP! I'M STUCK!

Thanks
Matt

PS - Holy... I've only posted 3 times on here??? What have I been doing? Sleeping?

Bump.

Somebody's gotta have experience installing on a farm... Anybody?

This is not a DNN issue, this is a trust issue because the server does not trust the file share you are linking to in IIS the same way it trusts a local drive on the server.  All you have to do is run the CASPOL utility on the web server that is linking to the file share.  Follow the instructions posted at this link and you should be up and running:

Hrmm, that seemed so promising. I tried:

caspol.exe -m -ag 1.2 -url file://prd-corp-host-2/shared/* FullTrust

Didn't work. Then I noticed (in the bottom of an Explorer window with the share open from the web server) that the share was in the "Internet" zone. So, I tried this (as implied by an MSDN article):

caspol.exe -m -ag 1. -url file://prd-corp-host-2/shared/* FullTrust

No dice. I'm guessing there may be other security issues becasue it's in the "Internet" zone?

I appreciate your help. Unfortunately, I'm on a bit of a time budget here, since I'm going on vacation next week.

Thanks
Matt

PS - If you have time, pls feel free to MSN-IM me...

I seem to be on the right track here. Made the domain user an admin on the web box and the site loaded up. I have a feeling this is way too broad. Maybe it just needs "Log on local" access?

I'll keep working on it...
