I want to permit trusted users of my site to upload files to a specific directory. This is so that (say) a club newspaper editor can upload pictures and link to them in a Text/HTML module. I can set the folder permissions in the file manager to the required security role, but when a trusted user access the documents module, he does not see an 'upload new file' link.

The reason you don't see the link is because you don't have the proper root folder selected where they have the proper permissions to upload.  You can go into the modules settings and assign the root folder to the same one where you set the permissions.  This will have that selected when they go to upload and they will see the link then.

Crispy - thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I cannot find anywhere in the module settings to define the 'root' folder - apart from setting the icon, which is irrelevant. I have created my target folder as a subfolder of the portal root folder and assigned the necessary read/write priviledges to my selected security group on that subfolder. members of that group can see the module but not see files in that folder nor upload new files.

Stuart, I was completely off base.  Must have had something to do with late nites and beer.  There is no way to set the default folder.  The user can, however, select the folder they can upload in to.  This should be a core enhancement which allows the module settings to set the default root folder so users don't have to select one.
