Sorry, my brain is completely scrambled at the end of the week. I got this thread and another I was participating in on Sitepoint a bit mixed up.... I was thinking Image-based menu w/ non-"Web-safe" fonts... basically, the only way to render non-safe fonts so they appear correct across everyone's machine is to figure out a way to generate those images w/ the correct font on the server (or at least the last time I looked into this)....

But like I said, my brain is frazzled and I'm pretty sure I mis-spoke there, sorry about that but thanks for pointing it out. :)

Yep, I know what you mean by the brain being scrambled by the end of the week . . . sometimes it happens even earlier!

Well, I hope you will give it a rest over the weekend.

I'd try radmenu from telerik. Their menu allows for image based menus natively as an ASP.NEt control  but I'm not sure about whether its DNN provider supports images. Their provider however is pretty easy to modify so it would be trivial to add an image based nav (I guess based on tabid for the image name)

That said, this kind of goes against the dynamic aspect of DNN. What are you trying to do that couldnt be done with CSS background images and overlays? If its a font issue something like a sifr tool might be the answer.

Hi, Michael.  It is a font issue. Our designers are trying to maintain tight control of the fonts in terms of which font to use, kerning and leading (as in DTP), using a condensed version of the font, etc.

I know, I know, this is the web and it should be handled differently from print, but we are an ad agency and the visual effects are very important too, and the designers' specifications reign supreme.

What is a sifr tool?

Thanks for your further assistance.

Jenn,

It's a css font replacement tool using css and flash. It degrades gracefully to standard text and is search engine friendly. We use it all the time for page titles but I've never tried it in a menu before. See an example here:
