SQL 2005 questions

1) Servers: I have SQL 2005 Standard version installed on localhost while DNN docs says SQL Express is used.  Do I need to make any adjustments?

2) Users/Permissions: I will be uploading my DNN installation to a shared hosting environment that uses SQL Server 2005....so....

2a) I need to use Database principal rather than Server principal, correct?

2b) As database principal, do I use Database Roles or do I use Application Roles? (as the specific DNN application will be in charge of the database)

2c) For localhost, the DNN Installation Guide appears to specify Windows authentication - am I wrong?

2d) When installing on localhost, can I set up Users and/or Roles in a manner that will require minimum adjustment when uploading DNN and my database to shared hosting? (i.e., so that only the database connection string in web.config will need to be re-pointed to the shared hosting server)

THANK YOU.

Hi sharnish,

I believe what you'll want to do is create a new database in SQL 2005 for DNN to build and add a SQL user with dbo owner permissions on the database you've created. Then in web.config there's two db connection strings you'll want to change (one in the <connectionStrings> section and another just underneath in the <appSettings> section) to read something like:

"Server=ComputerNameOrIPAddress;Database=DatabaseName;User ID=YourUser;password=!Password;"

Just change the parts in red to match those of your database.

Regarding setting up DNN locally before moving to the web server...

Easily done. When you install locally just remember to add your domain name as an alias for your portal (so DNN will work once you move it online), then when you upload the site and database all you should need to do is update the connection strings mentioned above to match the newly created online database.

Hope that helps you out.
