I removed ALL permissions on the folder for NETWORK SERVICES, then re-applied with FULL CONTROL. This seems to have resolved the issue.

I believe the documentation should be changed considering the READ, WRITE, MODIFY and CHANGE permissions don't appear to work.

However, this may create some sort of security issue in that with full rights folders / files can be deleted.

Hope this helps.

BTW - Using Win2003 Server (Standard), MS-SQL 2005 Enterprise, .NET 2.0, IIS6.

 Hi all

I am trying to install the DNN 4.4 and I come up at the stage that I got the following error below.

What I have done so far are:

1. I moved the compression.config from /config to the root

2. NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE sets as FULL CONTROL on virtual directory

Any help regarding this I am really appreciated.

Thanks

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Inetpub\vhosts\DEWACORP.COM\subdomains\SITENET\httpdocs\Config\Backup_2007317826\web_.config'.Access to the path 'C:\Inetpub\vhosts\DEWACORP.COM\subdomains\SITENET\httpdocs\web.config' is denied.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

  • If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
    1. the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.
  • If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
    1. the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

Recently, purchased the Professional DotNetNuke 4 book by Wrox. It seems that there is reference to applying permissions to either the source or install folder where DNN4 was uncompressed. However, i've was applying permissions to the NETWORK SERVICES "group". Can't seem to find any reference to a NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICES User Account . Is this a default user that is installed with Active Directoy. Most likely many of us aren't using AD for a single server installation.

So, definately there is some form of a typo in regards to the correct account that needs permission.

No typo.

The NETWORK AUTHORITY account is a local account on Server 2003, Server 2008 and Vista.  It is a hidden account, you type in the account name in the permissions box, don't search for it (or change the location to NT AUTHORITY).  On XP the ASP.NET process account is ASPNET.  There is no requirement that you use these accounts, they are simply the defaults.  You can assign any account to the ASP.NET process, and it's that account that needs permission.  Of course, if you were changing the process account you would also understand what the change meant.

Simply type  "network service" in the box, then give it "modify" rights.

I too have the same error:

....................................................................................
If using Windows 2003 - IIS6

    1. the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.
  • ....................................................................................

    (I am on Windows 2003, II6.)
    I have given NETWORK SERVICE full permission, but still get this error when browsing to: localhost / dnn / install folder.

    2. When browsing to localhost/dnn I get this error:

    ...................................................................................
    An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
    ....................................................................................

    so I changed this in web.config:
      >> remoteOnly to    <customErrors mode="Off" />

    But still get the same error.

    any ideas?

    regards
    mark

    further to my post above,

    I don't think my error is a permissions issue.... (only occurs when browsing to /install/installwiard.aspx - even though my permissions have filtered down to all sub folders and files)

    And  when I browse to localhost/dnn - i get this error:

    Keyword not supported: 'epix\sqlexpress;database'. (epix = our database server)

    or

    Keyword not supported: '192. * . * .* \sqlexpress;database'. (our database server ip address)

    my web.config :

         <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
        <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=epix\SQLExpress;Database=dnn; Integrated Security=true; User ID=****; Password=****;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
      </connectionStrings>
      <appSettings>
        <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
        <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=epix\SQLExpress;Database=dnn; Integrated Security=true; User ID=****; Password=****; " />
        <add key="InstallTemplate" value="DotNetNuke.install.config" />

    anyone, any ideas?

    regards,
    mark.
