This is the exact post I was just about to open, so hopefully, seeing as I am being a good forum person someone can answer my related question.

Basically my requirements are quite low. Best case scenario I will have 500 people browsing my site per day and only be adding around 5 members per month. My members area will have a custom application so may be quite demanding.

Do I need a dedicated server?

When comparing dedicated versus hosted, how much do providers pack into one server? For example I can get a server with the following specs

2Ghz Celeron , 512MB DDR,  40GB Disk for about £50/month.(about $90) Unlimited bandwidth. Though there is NO support.

Do I need it? Is it enough? Would a hosted environment give me better performance/value

Thanks

It's a pretty trivial set up once you know what you are doing. Heres the steps that I do. If I miss anything someone please correct me I'm doing this from memory:

1. Download and install SQL server Express and SQL Management Studio on the server
2. Download the installation version of DNN and unzip to the appropriate folder (i.e Inetpub/wwwroot/yoursite)
3. Add a file permission for Full Access for Network Service to you DNN root and be sure it propigates to all child folders.
4. Open IIS and create a new web application pool (The defaults are fine) and name it NET2. (This is in case you have applications running on .Net1.1 on the same server.
5. Still in IIS add a new website (or virtual directory) make sure that under the ASP.Net tab you select .Net 2.0. Under the home directory tab create an application (defaults are fine) and assign it to the NET2 app pool. Click ok and browse to your new DNN site.

The main tripping points for most people seem to be #3 and #5.
