Hi,

I'm fairly new to DNN and have a question regarding module development.  I have downloaded the source code for a module which was developed for DNN v3.x.  I want to modify the module to extend its functionality for use in DNN v4.4.1.  I don't know how to add the module source code into the source code for DNN v4.x.  It doesn't help that i really don't know where to start!

Can anyone help me?, I have tried searching around but it seems that the module development was different in v3.x to v4.x and no-one seems to cover the subject of upgrading module source code.

Has anyone managed to fix a similar problem?  I have tried a couple of ways but nothing seems concrete.  E.g. Avoiding missing references, code behind pages etc.

Thanks

DClayton (Module Development Newbie)

The Module Upgrade Wizzard is one place to start - it has a go at the basic conversion stuff - and it dont do to bad a job for what its worth:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=OEDRV4hSYV4%3d&tabid=125&mid=3178

I also seem to recall some blog entries on the topic - have a look at:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/448/Default.aspx

There are also a number of articles and threads around the talk about the models for DNN 4.x module development.  The DNN 4.x module developers guide is well worth a read before you just in too far into the module frey

In all honesty though - you best bet is to build a couple of simple DNN 4.x modules first - to get some idea of how things work.  Have a look at the tutorials on Michael Washington's web site:
http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN_Module4/

That should give you a good basis to better understand what asp.net 2 is all about.

Thanks for the information.  The module upgrade wizzard assumes that you have got a copy of DNN 3.x installed.  I have downloaded a module's source code in the form of a Visual Studio Project.  Back in DNN 3.x it appears that you had a solution containing all of the modules as projects.  In DNN 4.x you simply open the site in Visual Studio and work from there.  However, opening the site does not give you access to the code behind files as they do not get installed.  I'm really confused by this.

If i open the source code as a stand alone project, it won't compile because 90% of the required DNN files are missing.  Am i missing something obvious here?

Excellent article, i've actually managed to do most of what is covered here and got it working.  Unfortunatly i took a more manual approach but i think this article will be a big help to anyone with the same problem.

Thank you very much
