I was just wondering if anyone has successfully set up a number of filters in Google Analytics to convert DNN urls to more meaningful stats. I've been trying to use a Search and Replace filter to replace something such as /Default.aspx?tabid=249 with the page name, i.e. Downloads but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I've asked help from the Google Analytics team but haven't received a response and it's been about a month.

Ideas or thoughts?

In GA, if you select webmaster view there is an option to look at stats by page title. This is what I use in preference to the URL report.

You might want to consider using the href exchanger from inventua.com ... then you can have urls like /our-product-name.aspx (it uses the tab name) shown to everyone (not just google analytics)

This type of url could also improve your search engine optimization, since it will make your page more likely to show up for searches on "product name"

But if your site is well established and indexed it may be too late to use this href exchanger - because google et al will see /default.aspx?tabid=1 and /our-product-name.aspx as being two different pages with exactly the same content .. and duplicate content usually means low rank.

And, if you dont want to use a href exchanger, the answer to your question is at the google analytics help centre - use a search and replace filter:

Hi JK,

As I mentioned originally, I'm using a search and replace filter but it doesn't seem to be changing anything. That's essentially what I inquired to the Google team about. Here are my filter settings:

Search: /Default.aspx?tabid=249
Replace: Download

but I still see lot's of
/Default.aspx?tabid=249 in my results and no Download.

Perhaps it doesn't see the search string as a valid regular expression but I can't see why not. Maybe I need to escape some of the characters. I mentioned to the Google team that it would be great to enter in a search and replace and a couple target urls so you could see the results as it takes a while before the filters take hold. It's a real wait and see approach that can take weeks before you get all of the filters the way you want them.

Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Sorry I read too quickly and didnt see that you had already tried the search and replace filter... the correct answer is that your regex is wrong because the "?" is one of the regex special characters, you have to escape it with "\", eg

/Default.aspx\?tabid=249

You can use a regex checker to see if it works or not

ps I wouldnt expect to get a reply from google on anything, they would get too many email requests to be able to answer them all
