Re Portal Alias - forgot to add - doh!

As my deployed environment is far different from my local host I wanted a method of making a cloned DNN install of key sites on backup domains that I can then use to test and develop on.

I followed another post on procedures for this but did not add a new portal alias.
All seemed to work but of course the DB now points to the original alias.

I have now read Eriks useful blog and post http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/105609/scope/posts/Default.aspx
and see I have to get the ISP to cycle IIS.

Is there no method to change this via SQL management tools ?

Thanks
 Ian

Ian, you can manually edit the records inside the portal alias table

Hi Sebastian

Yes but I am unsure of how to do this - I have SQL management express and can connect to the DB but then I am stuck as I am unsure of how to add the record.

I think it may be easier to simply start again.

On a broader point - when doing this in future if I add the alias before I backup the DB will the source site remain unaffected ?

Excuse my ignorance - its just an area I have not needed to touch on before.

As ever thanks for your time - am really looking forward to filters in UDT

Ian,

adding a record is straight forward: right click the table and show all records. Enter the last row and fill in all values (except ID). leave the row and the values are stored. done

you can provide as many aliases as you like, it depends on the name server and IIS settings, which get actually pointed to your site.
