From time to time I take my production site home for test etc. I do the following:

Backup the database on the production server and restore it in my test environment.

Change the name of the site in the PortalAlias table.

Make sure that I have the same values for the machineKey in the web.config - so I can log on with the same user name and passwords

You da man! I just needed to edit the PortalAlias table in SQL 05 and change intranetnew to intranet.

Life is good.
