The register option can be disabled from Admin -> Site Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Security Settings

To modify the text "Login", change the value for Login.Text in the file "Login.ascx.resx"; you can find this file in <Dnn Website folder>\admin\Skins\App_LocalResources

Other than that you will have to customise your own Dnn Skin to remove the [LOGIN] tag

Maybe there is a way of moving it to an obscure place on the page such as right down the bottom of the page?

You can remove it from the skin.

I guess you could have a different skin for each page?

Not that sure really. Not a requirement I have. I don't understand how a login/register link can be confusing.

As it was mentioned you can modify/create a skin to either move the link, or remove it if you really do not want it displayed.  That is the only option you have to fully remove the "login" link.
