I just installed Vista Ultumiate on a spare disk on mew fairly new Atholon X2 4200. All went very well. Out of the box it found all of my hardware, didn't need to add any driver for printer, WiFi, GB Ethernet, Graphics Card that I did need for XP. The only hardware it missed was Microsoft Hardware (Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse).

Install all layered software and all work ok so far except I need new versions SQL Express, MS Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse.

Now for the hard part - DNN.  The old instruction had:

  • Turn off simple file sharing  (How in Vista)
  • Share for web (read/wriet/execute code) (How in Vista)
  • In inetmgr config virtual dir to point to DNN install
  • Make sure Default.aspx is doc type and ASP2.0 is selected (How in Vista)
  • Give IIS full control of directory (Now Network Services in IIS 6-7)

The Vista designers sure moved a lot around and changed the UI too much. Anybody have an update on how we run a localhost IIS setup on Vista that might address the above details?

/DaveS

PS I just discovered that FCKeditor's spell checker (iespell) wasn't installed when I spell checked this post. On Vista the instal just loops installing it and then saying it isn't installed. Worked on in IE7 on XP.

DaveS,

The setup on Vista is actually fairly similiar to the setup on XP, however as you mentioned a few of the options have been moved around a bit.  I am trying to get some time to work on the instructions to install on Vista, however to get you started.

-Simple file sharing can be found in "Folder Options" from the control panel, it is still down at the bottom
-Share for the web, that is just setting up the virtual directory in IIS, this process is similar, the big thing to remember is to select "Classic Application Pool" for the application pool
-Default.aspx as the default document, again this is fairly similar to the XP instructions as it is a virtual directory option
-Full IIS control for the directory, again fairly similar to XP, right click on the directory and go to sharing and security.  The biggest difference is that you must grant permissions to "NETWORK SERVICE" rather than ASPNET or IUSR.

Have a look at my detailed Win XP instructions on my website (linked below) you should be able to get along with it and my notes above...otherwise like I mentioned I am working on a full Vista tutorial hopefully by the end of the weekend.
