Hi,

I was just wondering what people's experience is of Google rankings with websites they've created with Dot Net Nuke?  I've put my latest one through W3C's validation and it's got quite a number of errors, ones that are difficult to change as they are part of DNN's internal coding.  We've had problems in the past with lack of visibility in Google due to unvalidated code and I'm a bit concerned about this.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Heather

Hi Heather,

I've written two articles on DotNetNuke search engine optimization in the last month, both of which were mentioned in the latest DotNetNuke newsletter.

DotNetNuke Search Engine Optimization
Removing Duplicate Content

You should be reading the second one - it is very easy to have duplicated content in DotNetNuke and not even know it.  Search engines dont like duplicated content at all.

For w3c validation, just fix as many as you can.  I've fixed over 60 validation errors on my own skin, but still have a few to go.  I didnt see any difference after fixing validation errors, but had an immediate improvement when I fixed content duplication issues.

Hi JK,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  I'm *extremely* new to DNN which is why I haven't received the last newsletter.  I'll read the 2 articles you've written and have a play with the skins and see how I get on.  It was the duplicate content that caused us the most problems in the past but I know html errors are not liked in the search engine world as a rule either so will try and fix as many as poss, as suggested.

Cheers,

Heather

Just read the article, but could you tell me where to put the robots.txt file that I would create using your code? At the root of the dnn install?

Best,

Katherine

Yes thats right, it should be in your root directory - if you can use your browser to open www.yoursite.com/robots.txt then it is in the right place.

Thanks for pointing that out, I will update the article :)
