I had a similar design issue. A tab was only supposed to show on hover and current tab. After extensive trial and research I have come to the conclusion that:

1) the the "Leftseparatoractive" and "rightseparatoractive" are nonfunctional, though breadcrumb seems to work (see code below)

  • leftseparatorbreadcrumb='<img src="images/x.gif" alt="" width="14px">'
  • rightseparatorbreadcrumb='<img src="images/x.gif" alt="" width="14px">'
  • leftseparatorbreadcrumbcssclass='leftseparatorbreadcrumb'
  • rightseparatorbreadcrumbcssclass='rightseparatorbreadcrumb'
  • corresponding css: 
              leftseparatorbreadcrumbcssclass='leftseparatorbreadcrumb'
              rightseparatorbreadcrumbcssclass='rightseparatorbreadcrumb'

2) I can't use pseudo classes on a "wrapper div" and subdivs for the tab (because the skin design won't work in xhtml (when will we get full length divs? *Sigh*) so I have to use:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

3) I cannot seem to use "rootmenulefthtml" and "rootmenurighthtml" to drill down through the css starting with MainMenu_RootMenuItemActive and change the background (foreground being a transparent gif)

 If anyone has come up witha solution to this, other that me just changing menu providers (more work) or making the tab a fixed width image in the MainMenu_ItemActive class (not ideal, but quick & dirty; ie - what I am planning on doing at this point), please post!
