Hi,

I was wondering whether anybody used DotNetNuke as a framework only for a web application.

We would not be using any of the portal features, that's why we are unsure whether it's "worth" using a powerful suite such as DotNetNuke and disable a large portion of the functionality. It might be easier to start from scratch using asp.net controls only.

Are there any comparisons available of how DotNetNuke compares as a framework with other .net web frameworks (e.g. Spring.Net)?

Cheers
Beni

What type of site are you trying to ultimately build?

You don't have to use the multiple portal functionality within DNN, I setup sites all the time that are only a single portal and use DNN's ability to create pages/content and administer all of that information through a browser. You don't even have to enable registrations or logins for users if you don't need that functionality, though you'll still want to login to manage the content as an admin.

I started doing a dedicated Intranet applicaiton with DNN where just the application module would show.  But you know what, along the way you realize that you may take advantage of other pages for other things that are related to the application and having DNN easily take care of that is a blessing.

I have no experience with other frameworks, but have done ASP.Net sites and apps from scratch, and from that experience I can tell you that DNN will save a lot of coding for simple things like user login, authentication, and validation.  Think about it, why write (and debug) all that from scratch instead of going directly to code the real functionality that your application needs.

Just my .02.

Hi Chris,
thank you for your response. I'm very impressed with DotNetNuke itself and the support here in this forum.

We intend to build an web site with several user roles (admin, authentictated user, guest). Depending on the user role, access may be restricted.

Basically, authenticated users will be able to view certain information on screen and generate several different reports based on certain criteria (PDF). Data is retrieved from various (external) sources and aggreated (as a scheduled task running every night). Some calculations will be done in the background.

Administrators would be able to add new algorithms or trigger updates of the database. User management is not a responsibility of the administrator. Instead, LDAP should be used for group membership and login.

Initially, 250 users concurrent users have to be supported.

I think that we could use the active directory module for this purpose.

In addition, we've found a DotNetNuke module that allows us to integreate it with Reporting Services, which could prove useful.

Cheers

Hi Carlos,
thank you for your response.

User authentication and validation would be the main features we would use in DotNetNuke. We would use the Active Directory module as well. I agree that it doesn't make sense to reinvent the wheel over and over again.

I appreciate your help.

Cheers
Beni
