Hi,

My hosting provider doesn't provide dbo/db_owner access, instead I get a db user with the db roles below:

  • db_datareader
  • db_datawriter
  • db_ddladmin
  • db_securityadmin

According to the installation manual I should be able to install dnn with this db user.

I tried the installation using the install wizard in DNN4.5.1. I choose the typical setup and entered the connection information to my sql express database. Both the folder permission and database connection tests completed succesfully.

Run as db Owner checked:
Installing Database - Version 4.4.0...FAILURE 400 - The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'UpdateDatabaseVersion', database 'dreftultra', schema 'dbo'.

Run as db Owner unchecked:
Installing Database - Version 4.4.0...undefined...Success

Installation of Database Complete
>> the install wizard becomes unresponsive

I believe this is an error in the dnn install sql scripts. Other forum users have confirmed this. I'm hoping someone could verify this and help me to fix this, since at this moment I can't install DNN...

Any help with be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance,

rudgr

I have the same issue, with the latest install bits. SQL connection checks out, as do directory permissions. I get this error and the install hangs in IE with no next button, and in FF with the next button enabled but it doesn't do anything.

EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'UpdateDatabaseVersion'

Can anybody out there help us? This is sort of a real bad blocking bug...

thanks!

Hi,

This is indeed very frustrating, I've reported this several times, but no one seems to really pick it up (except shawn mehaffie). I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one facing this issue, and that you have been able to reproduce this.

It would be very nice if someone would take the time to test the exact scenario and verify the problem. Anyone?

THANKS!

When the DNN installation is completed it creates and executes multiple stored procedures and to get this to work as desired you really need to have DBO permissions on the database.

Otherwise typically without DBO rights you will have to then specifically grant execute permissions to your user so that it can use the procedures that it just created.

Hi Mitchell,

When the DNN installation is completed it creates and executes multiple stored procedures and to get this to work as desired you really need to have DBO permissions on the database.

This effectively means that I'm not able to install dnn anymore, since my hosting provider will not grant me DBO permissions. I can imagine this applies for other (shared hosting) dnn users as well?

Untill 4.3.5 or something I was able to succesfully install without DBO permissions, as is also confirmed by the installation manual. It seems that this has been introduced after 4.3.5?

Do I need DBO permissions only during installation, or also during upgrades? I might get the DBO permission temporary to circumvene this problem during install.

Otherwise typically without DBO rights you will have to then specifically grant execute permissions to your user so that it can use the procedures that it just created.

Could you please elaborate some more on this as I don't exactly understand what you mean. It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Rutger
