Ok... this is weird... it just worked...

How I got it to work?  I am not sure...

I was trying to localize the problem.  Since some other .aspx file, such as FilePermissions.aspx, works, I wondered if its a specific problem with Default.aspx.  So, I set out to create a very simple aspx page that only has a button and a label and when the button is click the label displays a message.  I put this page in the DNN's solution and republished the whole DNN into IIS.  I then went ahead and load this page from my browser.  This page loads ok.  So I thought, oh ok, then it might really be the problem of Default.aspx.  I then tried to load Default.aspx and was anticipating the same error to occur... but to my surprise, Default.aspx now loads!  And it has been working ever since...  I am really confused of what is going on...

Ok - one possible answer might be in your web.config.

The connection String needs to be configured in two places.

  <connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules

Both places are neccessary - the connectionStrings node is only for .NET2 components.  The appSettings node needs to be configured to support any .NET 1.1 component and all core modules are still .NET 1.1 modules.

I finally figured out what the problem was... it has to do with a table named PortalAlias.  Somehow a record was inserted with a incorrect value in the HTTPAlias field.  I don't know how and why that happened ...

The only thing that comes to mind for this is that default.aspx is not on the default documents for you web.
Open IIS manager, right click you VDir and on the documents tab check what page names have you listed, default.aspx must be there.
