The installation wizard is automatic, once you've configured your web.config and the database and copied the files to the server, browse to the server and the wizard starts.

I keep seeing the recommendation to rename Release.config to Web.config but I don't think that step is necessary in newer versions of DNN.  Can someone please corroborate?  I don't think I did it manually for my install of 4.5.0, specially now with the use of the database in App_data with SQL 2005.  It just works.

Also, there is a mention of the source Zip for installation.  I would recommend you to use the "Install" package of DNN to create your site.  Even if you want to do module development, the Install package is the way to go.  That is, unless you want to work with the code for the DNN Core (which is really deep waters).

theres differences between the different distributions. In the _install package the web.config already exists, in the _upgrade package it doesn't, as if it did it would overwrite the existing package when copied over an earlier install. In the starter kit, when you open it the welcome page will guide you through the necessary steps.

I have had a look through Every folder and file that I got from the download and I cant find a folder called "root" or any files called "release.config". Could you please tell me exactly how and where to find the release.config file please.

I also downloaded the "Install package" and got to the wizard, but I only get to this point in the wizard. When I click "Next" it just keeps popping up at the same place each time and doesnt move on to the next step. Do you know what the problem is?

Run Database Installation Scripts

The installation of the database scripts should have started when this page loaded. The Next button will be disabled until the Installation of the Scripts is complete.

Also, which is the best package to use - the source or install download?

Can you set up more than 1 DNN site on your local computer to work on at once? How is this done? Do you just set up a new folder with the files in it from the download and set up a new virtual directory pointing to that folder?

I also have a DNN 4.4 that was auto loaded by my host. They dont do version 4.5 as yet. Can I upgrade it to 4.5 from my end? If so how do I do this?

I really appreciate your help!! Thanks again.

The choice of package depends on what you plan on using the portal for. If you're just looking to get an install together then use the install package, but if you plan on doing module development, then it's good to use the source package. The upgrade package is designed for upgrades only

I've seen a number of reports of issues with the install wizard with the same error you have. It's a relatively small percentage, as the majority of people are having success with it. What version of the OS are you running, and what browser version are you using - i suspect it's a browser specific error as it looks an issue with the javascript (though we have some reports of people having issues when their database server is using case sensitive collations)
