When a user registers on my site and then logs in for the first time, they are directed to an "update their account" page.  First of all, this is annoying.  Can this be turned off?  If not, can I edit this page to remove the "mandatory" field status off of several fields it's asking to populate?  I hope this makes sense.  Thanks for your time.

Under the "Admin Settings" for your site, click on the "Advanced settings" and under the "security Settings" pick the type of user registration you want to use. You probably most likely have it on "verfied". Are your users signing up by themselves or are you signing them up?

Other than that I am not too sure.....

What's the difference between "verified" and "public" in the security settings?  There doesn't seem to be much documentation.  Thanks.

Public lets people create and ID and log in right away.  Verified sends an email to the user with a verification code they have to enter the first time they login to make sure they really exist at the email address they supplied.

I don't think this is the issue with your situation.  If you login as host (or admin for that one portal) you can go to the users area under admin and view any user.  There are check boxes next to each of the fields.  If they are checked it is required, if you uncheck it, they will not be.

If you want them to not be forced to supply the full profile, you can go to Admin > Users and then under the actions icon choose users settigns (I think that is it).  There is an option towards the bottom "Require a valid Profile for Login."  I think that is what you want to uncheck.
