I could be mistaken, but I think the location of the favicon -must- be located in the root of the website, per an IIS limitation.

That being the case, I think it would be really cool if the skin package could have several favicons to choose from. Here is how it might work:

  • The skin designer packages the skin with one or more favicons, each with a unique file name
  • When installed, the icons are stored in the skin folder as per usual.
  • Based on the Skin selection in Site Settings, a drop down list is populated with choices based on the file names
  • When a favicon is selected, DNN copies the favicon to the root of the site and renames it to “favicon.ico”

... and if you have multiple sites with different users, this happens every time, one of the users changes from one page to another.

no, it can be specified in page header (currently done by DNN logic per site)

as previously stated, I disagree. A favicon shall be a minature of the page logo, being stored aside the link in visitors' browser favorites, and not be some fancy design attribute per page.

I agree that the favicon should not change per page (but mostly due to IE caching issues) however, I disagree that it should be a miniature of the logo. I have several clients that have logos that do not work well at all when scaled down to the size of an icon. I think what you are say is that the favicon is representative of the business (organization, etc.) that owns the site, not the skin package it’s self. I agree with one caveat: While representing the business, the favicon should also fit within the theme of the site (skin), and therefore should be given the option of being deployed with the skin.

I realize that I’m somewhat co-opting this thread, but I believe these two issues go hand in hand. The primary being the method to deploy favicons (one or more), and I’m taking a little liberty in adding, how to select from multiple icons. Without developing a separate favicon manager for DNN, I believe that the skin deployment mechanism is a close fit to solve this issue.

By the way, The clients I mentioned earlier hired a designer to come up with some favicon choices. The designer in came back with no less than 5 favicons. As you can guess the clients liked them all. I would love to be able to give the site administrator (client employee) the ability to choose between favicons without having to give them FTP access.
