I would love to be able to give the site administrator (client employee) the ability to choose between favicons without having to give them FTP access.

If you add .ico as allowed upload extension in host settings, the admin can upload a favicon using the file manager.

Yes, I got that the first time. However using the file manager is quite awkward when giving the customer the option of having multiple favicons to choose from. Not to mention the fact that this doesn't address the skin designer's needs whatsoever. And by skin designer I mean anyone who designs a skin. Consider that the designer may be a company employee, or a web designer working on a single solution for a specific client, not just a "commercial" skin designer.

It is my first position that favicons are part of a web site, and therefore should be controllable via the Site Settings page. Whether or not the skin paradigm is used to facilitate management tasks or not is secondary. (Again, my apologies for co-opting this thread.)

BTW, I was wrong about favicons location being limited by IIS. It's actually a combination of browser behavior and/or meta tags (for those who may not have already known).

I think adding a favicon to a skinPACK would be a nice option, since in a way it's part of the corporate ID of the website and therefor should be part of the skin IMHO.

The favicon is used to visually identify your website amongst others (in Bookmark lists).

You could, if there's a favicon in the skinpack, copy it to the portal root if a skin from that skinpack would be applied, or reference it directly.

I think in some situations a different favicon for different pages could be useful.

Let say I have a company offering 3 services, I could then decide to split my site up visually with three skin variations.

Why wouldn't I use three variations of a favicon for people who link to pages about these services?

I must agree there will not be hundreds of people who are going to use this option, but I do see some use for it.

I was originally thinking to implement this with asp.net code by mapping the .ico extension, etc.., but if it was just part of the skin subsystem then it would be so easy (with no IIS config required) to just write out a simple..

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yoursite.com/Portals/_default/Skins/yourskin/favicon.ico" />

..for wherever the favicon will be sourced from.. searching in the current skin, portal root then finally the host root.

Why not just put it in the skin if you want it there?

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<%=SkinPath%>favicon.ico" />

You might have it defined twice, but I have a feeling it would still work.
