I recently got DNN4 and I'm trying out the Forum module. Still I did not figure out the following:
a) How can I make a forum open for all? Including unregistered users.
b) How do the Avatars work?!

The forum does not support anonymous posting (and won't in the next version at least)

Avatars required the gallery module in that version, but I believe there are some bugs around it.

I think it was possible to give anonymous people access, can't remember how. otherwise one could use any of the other modules allowing for writing by unregistered users.

As for the avatars, how does it work now?!

1. Create a gallery

2. Allow users to upload pics to the gallery.

3. Use the gallery..

.... I hope this is not to complicated and userfriendly.....
