Re: Cloning an installation.

I have an busy site that I need to update to 4.41.
I would like to make a copy of the existing database/installation and "clone" it to another domain so I can see what update issues I have.
I then want to copy and move the updated DB back to the operational domain name.

On a practice run while working from ErikVB's useful guide I forgot to add an HTTP alias and it is about this I need some clarification please.

If I add an alias to the original host settings does this means that the new installation will be able to "point" to the new copy of the DB ?

Are the 2 DB then linked in any way ?

Once I have the cloned install running should I then remove the new alias's from both installations ?

 Thank you

 Ian

Ian,

  • the only link between installation files and database are siteserver settings in web.config. If you want to create a clone for testing upgrade you need to alter database setting (except both are using same relative address)
  • http alias links site address to dnn portal within installation
  • if you forgot to add http alias before backup, you can add it manually to the portalAlias table in your database clone
