Does DNN have to be installed to the root folder in a shared environment in order to create multiple parent portals?

That is the recommended way to install DNN, whether you want to create parent portals on not.  Unless that is a reason that you cannot install DNN to the root, I would advise against it.  From other post on the forums, install to a none root directory can be done, but there is additional steps in redirecting traffic to the site that you do not need to do if it is installed in the root.  Base don that, IMO it is just to much trouble installing DNN to a sub-directory instead of the root.
