I'm not entirely certain that one is actually receiving an auto-log-in link with those emails - I could be wrong of course, but I always assumed it was just holding onto my cookie from my previous log-in... even over weeks at a time.

It's certainly useful when it does that and you can achieve that effect for DNN by reducing the cookie death rate. I do this:

In web.config in <authentication mode="Forms"> section (about line 105)
Set timeout="10080" which is one week – default 60.

You could make it go for a month, or some period that suits the frequency your visitors are expected to drop in at.

I'm still looking for a solution....
I cannot imagine this hasn't been solved by somebody already........

Timo,

even if you cannot find anything, i'm sure its possible to create a module that can do this. I can imagine it working something like this:

  • module is used to create user accounts in bulk (eg by providing firstname, lastname and email address, and possible roles users need to be put in, maybe other profile fields as well (such as country, language, timezone...)
  • module will generate its own hash value that is made up from the userinfo, these values will be saved in a separate table
  • module sends out email invitations to newly created users, email will contain unique link for user that will log him in

What's your budget for this ;) ?

Erik, I agree, it shouldn't be that difficult to do, I just couldn't imagine nobody solved the problem before.

As I learned from your last lecture I didn't want to reinvent the wheel....

The deadline for this is at least  half a year away... so I am not in a hurry...

By the way the module you describe could already do more then I would need, I just want to have a group of users that should be able to log in using a link but I still need to know who has "logged in"

This is to make it as easy as possible for them, they could just bookmark the link to access the site.
