There are currently some issues/lack of features in the security.  It seems that right now all you can do is give someone nothing or everything.

I don't know how involved it would be, but if the permissions were set up like the Forum module, only the author (and Admin) could mess with their own pictures and albums...

I too have been looking at this.  I'm attempted to get into the source code to simply delete the edit/delete options from the menu.  Again not a perfect fix because technically the page and permissions to edit/delete still exist if someone were to stumble upon the correct URL but without a link to it I think it would be pretty secure from the average user.
