Try the solution from Ventrian Systems. Scotts solution is solid and works well in every environment I've tried it, and is applied site wide. Also, PageBlaster from Snapsis gives you the same functionality at a page level, as well as offering a very nice performance boosting compression and caching. John offers both a free version and a "deluxe version".

I looked at the Ventrain solution, and it looks just like what the doctor ordered; but something I read there begs the question: Are "human friendly" URLs less search engine friendly than "search friendly" URLs? I would like more intuitive URLs, like www.mysite.com/forums, but not if they come at the expense of search engine results...thoughts?

urlFormat="HumanFriendly" < urlFormat="SearchFriendly" ?

It is possible to turn any Url into a short url without any querystring variables as long as the new Url has a page with an extension recognized by .Net

You can do this using the core UrlRewriter in DotNetNuke. The following rule rewrites http://www.snapsis.com/PageBlaster.aspx to a specific product page.

    <RewriterRule>
      <LookFor>.*PageBlaster.aspx</LookFor>
      <SendTo>~/Default.aspx?tabid=589&ProductID=10</SendTo>
    </RewriterRule>

But if you also want to rewrite the Urls that are automatically generated on your site (internal links) then you need a filter on the output of your page.
PageBlaster will allow you to replace any output of your page using rules that you design.

The following is an in depth thread of how this process works:
