If I create a site on my laptop, can I simply copy the folder to another computer that has the same version of DNN installed?

As usual the answer is "it depends". What version of DotNetNuke and asp.net are you talking about. I've done xcopy deployments of DNN 4.x versions which used SQL Express user instances, but normally you would have to use a process such as http://www.smcculloch.net/Resources/Articles/tabid/213/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/82/Moving-DotNetNuke-Sites-from-Dev-To-Prod.aspx to transfer files (note: if both sites use the same sql database this process is simplified somewhat and xcopy if possible)

Thanks for the response. So essentially if both servers are running the same versions of DNN and SQL Server then a straight copy of all files (except web.config I'm assuming) should work?

actually, no. If you're using the same database (or an identical copy of a database), you need to ensure that your web.config has the same MachineValidationKey and MachineDecryptionKey values as they're used to secure portal access and encrypt/decrypt user passwords. I'd recommend you read the installation document, it goes into detail on installing and upgrading, and it should help you understand the dependencies, so you can determine the best way for you to support copies.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see what else I can find out about the keys.
