In his TrainCert Introduction module Jan shows how to create multiple portals in a single DNN installation by creating and alias to www.trainscert.com. I'm guessing he made an entry to the etc\hosts file for 127.0.0.1. Is this possible on Windows XP, or are there some IIS configurations I need to make this work. Or is it simply that dotnetnuke understands by examining the url that it knows how to redirect to the appropriate folder?

Depending on what you're trying to do, DNN will know based on the incoming URL which portal it's loading. So if you're modifying the HOSTS file and pointing http://name1/ http://name2/ etc to your 127.0.01 they should all respond via IIS, and DNN should be able to handle loading the proper portal, assuming you have DNN running at the root of your IIS and not out of a virtual directory

Thanks for your reply. As a matter of fact, I am running DNN in a virtual directory. My machine is a Windows XP Professional development machine with multiple web projects on it that I'm developing or supporting. As far as I know, IIS on Windows XP will only allow me to specify one root web. Is this correct?

I did try creating an etc\hosts alias to 127.0.0.1. DNN accepted it just fine when I created the portal, however I get an IE HTTP 500.100 - Internal Server Error - ASP error Internet Information Services when I try to navigate to it. Looks like IIS is trying to spin up classic ASP verus ASP.NET.

Is there any way around this.

I was able to accomplish what I needed by creating a child portal.
