Hi,

I need to migrate a whole load of users from an old site  into my new DNN site.  I have mapped the old site users table to the appropriate ones in DNN.  I have a script to copy over their usernames, emails etc.  But I am haveing a problem when it comes to passwords.  I want to give them all a default password with which to initially login in.  I don't understand the UserID column  in aspnet_Users and the aspnet_members.  The UserID seems to be a GUID, but how does that match the userid in the Users table?  And how do I set them all a default password?

The join to the aspnet table is completed based on username between it and the DotNetNuke Users table.

If you know a user that has a password that you would like to set as the default for your imported uses you can copy that password to the users account.

I have a few tutorials on my blog site covering the setting of passwords and migration of users that might be of benefit to you http://www.mitchelsellers.com

Hello Mitch,

Thanks for the reply, and to all the other questions that I haven't thanked you for, before.  Anyway I tried the technique that you suggested (http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/24/Creating-DotNetNuke-Host-Account-Via-SQL.aspx) but found that this only works if I give the new account a 'SuperUser' role.  Otherwise, despite the fact that it shows in the database in the users, aspnet_users and aspnet_membership tables, when I try to log in, it doesn't recognise the new user.  Also, if I create the new user account as superuser then change it to a non-superuser, the login fails.  I'm not quite sure what the relationship between the login and the tables is.  I thought that the users table was read to determine if a user account existed and the aspnet_membership table was used to check the password.  Am I missing something?

Sunil

I just thought I would make a note here for any other individuals that might be interested since I answered this on my blog site.

The post referenced above on my website is to create a host account, the reason it doesn't work for normal user accounts is that you must also insert an entry into the UserPortals table to associate the user account with your desired portal.

I will be publishing a tutorial within the next few days that will explain the process of creating a NORMAL user on your site.
