this topic died but i really need an answer and a fix. i'm getting tired of answering the same question every day from my dev team: where are the admin and host links? "well you have to click "install new modules" for host area and "site" for admin area then use the child links from there..."

someone please give a fix, this is craziness

Can I suggest something simple? Download a legacy version of DNN - the one where the functionality you are talking about was spotted last - and extract just the Links skin object files to your current installation. Make sure to back up your current files - Links.ascx/ascx.vb - abd give it a try.

If you are correct and Links skin object used to do that, it might work. And if it won't, revert the changes.

I personally vaguely recall such functionality, though...

It looks like you are right, I just tried and 4.4.1 does and 4.5.1 doesn't render the admin link.

I checked the VB code and there doesn't seem to be any difference, copying the links.ascx and links.ascx.vb files also didn't make any difference.

However I jus realised I did edit the 4.4.1 database to show admin and host links. and I didn't do this for the 4.5.1

(DisableLink is set to 0 instead of the default 1)

Could that be the problem?

I was able to resolve the problem with the missing nav menu links for ADMIN and HOST after installing DNN version 4.09.01 by 1) uninstalling this version completely and by this I mean delete the database in SQL mngr as well as all login references to it, and all the httdocs files in the directory as well as the virtual directory associated in inet mngr; 2) After having done this, I downloaded the 5.0 version of DNN and reinstalled. Incidentally, if anyone is having trouble getting a good clean install and have spent the countless hours learning the ropes on this, I sympathize and can point you to this excellent tutorial reference for installing DNN on your machine: http://seablick.com/blog/71/a-newbies-guide-to-installing-dotnetnuke.aspx 3)After successfully reinstalling and now I think this is the key part, do not type in the url of 'http://localhost/filefolder/default.aspx?ctl=login', but instead, click the actual login icon link on the home page and login as the default host. Once you do this you should see the Admin and Host links next to Home on the nav menu. I think the problem with the earlier version was that the Login icon link was not working which I've read on other DNN forums is an issue that has appeared previously and manually typing in the url was not taking me to the right login window. This worked for me so I hope it works for you too. - danielle@artsyfartsycode.org
