Hello,

I’m assuming this is a very simple question for any seasoned web developer.  I am attempting to make the transition from desktop development to web, so please excuse simple nature of the question.

I have a module that I am building in DNN that takes in a decent amount of information from the user. This data is stored in a database, and items entered later on the page requires linking to the data entered earlier.  My problem is due to the dependent nature of the data it cannot all be submitted to the database at once, it must be done in phases.  So when phase 2 is submitted I loose the key field I have stored in a variable due to the postback.  I can fix this via a kluge of putting the key value in a textbox on the form so that it is maintained during through the postback, but I personally don’t like looking at guids on a user input form

I’m thinking that there must be an easy way around this and it must be done in DNN all over the place.  Is the correct way to solve this problem to use SessionState?  I didn’t see a SessionState entry in the web.config of DNN, thus I was thinking there must be another way as well.

Any advice, samples, links to source, would all be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There are definately a variety of options for maintaining state between postbacks.  What I would recommend in your situation is to use a HiddenField control to do basically what you're doing now, just without it showing up to the user.  You can always push it into the Session or put it in the Cache or write it on the QueryString, but if you just need to maintain it over a postback (and it won't be a security problem to store it on the client), a HiddenField should serve you rather well.

Hope it helps,
