I think the biggest thing with some of the DNN developers out there, or at least myself is that we are not 100% sure what functionality is desired by the community.

For example I know what I need to manage my course this summer.  I also have an idea of how blackboard works (I have used it for multiple college courses that I have taken) but I am not aware of what is liked/not-liked about it from the teaching community.  (Besides the price!)

Now that part I can help you on!  I have a bunch of teachers here just chomping at the bit waiting for us to implement something like this!

The biggest thing would be the online courses.   Since the state started requiring online instruction, there have a bunch of online courses popping up, done by several companies.  Many of them have also provided their courses as a download that can be imported into Blackboard, and, starting recently, to Moodle.   If these same files could be imported (and implemented) into DNN, that would be a huge first step...  I'll have to look up what that format is...

Hello,

I would like to bring to your attention the fact that Moodle supports Web Services and I think that a an integration between it and DNN would be easier this way. I have tested the Web Services with some simple Windows Forms and they work.

Also, I have successfully installed Moodle 1.8 on SQL Server 2005, thus making integration even easier.

For Moodle Web Services take a look at this address.

Hope this helps.

That is interesting, but wouldn't that also require installing Moodle as a second webserver?

Dang!  The one thing that is the biggest thing is something that I can't necessarily work on.

I am in a non-compete agreement with an Online learning company (that I used to work for) that lasts for another year or so.

I can work on online quizzes and things, but to actually create SCORM and/or AICC compliant courses or a course building engine  would be a violation of the agreement, even on open-source projects.... :(

WRT Blackboard, I think they are losing ground ... decent enough product, but lousy support and a kind of odd and expensive price scheme.

ANGEL has been taking a bite out of Blackboard's clientele. ANGEL is asp and asp.net. Just got all scormed up in their last upgrade.

There was a project once ... DNNelearn ... which was aiming at a full DNN course management system. Looks like it may have bit the dust. Wonder if there is a salvagable core; looked like it had a good start.

Also see http://www.dotnetscorm.com which looks like it is in the doldrums as well.

I do agree that DNN would be a very good environment for such a project.

What community college ... not Kirkwood, eh?

I was looking at some of the "courses" that were being offered, and all of the ones I've seen so far appear to be entirely quizzes, so that might make things easier...

Moodle does have some really nice documentation available online, so everything you want to know is there.  The imported quizzes are in "Moodle XML" format, the structure of that is at http://docs.moodle.org/en/Moodle_XML.
