My immediate need is to set up an intranet survey website. I have been developing my intranet using VWD.  I would like to use dotnetnuke. I have not downloaded a version yet.  Which version do you recommend I use and is there a survey module available?

There is a basic survay module that ships with DNN, however you may also want to look at the list of modules at: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/794/default.aspx or http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=23

As far as which version to use that really depends on the modules you are planning to use (are they available for a given DNN version) and if you plan on running .Net 1.1 or 2.0.  The functionality of DNN is not the differentiator, your use of it is...

Thanks for your response.

We are running .Net 2.0. It appears the list of modules from third parties is quit expansive for version 3.0 but still quit small for version 4.0.  How fast do you expect the list to catch up for version 4.x?

That is really up to the module developer.  Many of the 3.x module will run just fine in 4.x, but it is up to the independent module developers to test and release...
