Is there any way to get a DNN site's navigation structure in a hierarchical XML form similar to the ASP.NET sitemap? Reading the doc on the navigation webcontrols, it seems like the answer should be yes, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Jon Henning, are you about? Can you shed some light on this, please, or point me in the right direction?

Any suggestions appreciated.

If you look at any of the skin objects like nav.ascx.vb you will see it makes a call to its base class (NavObjectBase) called GetNavigationNodes.  This in turn calls the static method GetNavigationNodes in the DotNetNuke.UI.Navigation namespace, which is the method you are looking for.

Thanks for the reply, Jon!

I was afraid of that: I get the following error when I use that method....

"HierarchicalDataBoundControl only accepts data sources that implement IHierarchicalDataSource or IHierarchicalEnumerable."

Can I use an XmlDataSource control and wire that up to GetNavigationNodes? I'll try that.

OK, I got the NodeCollection and then went through them all, creating NavDataPageHierarchyData for each one. My custom control accepts the resulting NavDataPageHierarchicalEnumerable collection.

Hi Jon,

I also need to get the nodes and use it in my own custom menu. Following your advice I did use part of the code from nav.ascx.vb in my own web control - to keep it simple for now I want to display th nodes data in a datalist on a web control. Here is the code for the web control:

The problem is that I keep getting an error of "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." for the GetNavigationNodes(objNode) method. This part of the code that I am using is the same as nav.asx.vb - any idea what shoud be done?
