in my module, i need to get access to the smtp name specified in the site/host (cannot remember which one) settings. anyone know how to retrieve this?

See the following: (the lines after the first one are the names of each SMTP setting in the HostSettings table)

I've been using HostSettings hashtable to access those settings (as in PortalSettings.HostSettings(["SMTP..."]).toString())

Does it make any difference?

Probably not... In fact, probably more efficient to do it the way you are since it would already be prepopulated.
