Hi,

I am slowly but surely going through all my Smart-Thinker modules and testing each control with PartialRendering enabled.

One thing I noticed is that while it works great on most views there is no way of showing the user that an AJAX request is being made - usually you get the nice little "Processing" AJAXY icon.

I have not looked into the AJAX toolkit enough to know, but is there a way of generically displaying a "wait" icon while these requests occur?  On PokerDIY  it takes a little while (for example and the user may attempt to do something else if they are not aware that something is happening). Is this something that has to be implemented at code level or can it be handled generically in the core DNN code with the UpdatePanel wrapper?

You can use the "UpdateProgress" panel in the ASP.NET AJAX implementation to put a message or anything like that up during processing.  However, you cannot simply do this via the "Supports Partial Rendering" flag in module settings as it requires the additional object on the control.

Such a good post they named it twice ;)

Ok, so it has to be done on a case by case basis - in your opinion (have not looked at this in detail yet) - would it be possible to edit the core DNN code and where it is inserting the wrapper you could insert an UpdateProgress bar at the same time? I guess I am trying to find our if it is worth adding this to Gemini as a generic core change or if it is not useful/possible. I suppose it also depends on how the progress bar is rendered - if it could be done whereever the cursor is or where the update panel updates then it would look ok, but if it was at the top of the page where it was added it may not look cool...

Personally I think it could be very intersting/useful to include an update progress control within each update panel from the core.

There would be some logistical issues that they would need to deal with, like giving users the ability to specify what was provided as "in progress" test as well as the "show after" property.  But It could be done on the core level.

It would be added at the top of the module, and it could be styled via CSS to accomplish many potential effects.
