I am evaluating DNN for an upcoming project.  So far it looks really good.

I do have one question I hope some of you can help me with.

In a standard DNN installation, whenever a user registers a new account, the user gets to choose the unique User Name for that account.  I want to know if it is possible to automatically assign a unique numeric ID (such as the UserID) as the User Name.  This way, the user would only be specifying his/her password and personal/contact details during the account creation process, and would receive the assigned User Name in an email.  In effect, I want each user to be logging in by an assigned number.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this with DNN?

I say you need to write custom code to do what you need.  It is doable. 

What is your logic for automatically assigning user id?  Is it a random number or next avail sequencial number?  Do you lookup the next avail user id from somewhere?
