by using a 3rd-party-web-host example, i meant do you install an instance of DNN on the host and another instance on the development machine? so whenever you finish somethings new on the development machine, you move the related files to the host and syn your database on your local machine with the host's?

do you make sure your DNN on your local looks exactly the same as the host? do you develop a new module on your local machine and move the module to the host after or you develop right on the host? i'm actually quite confused here.

the most common scenario is to develop local and install the module on the host when its ready

I have a local install and a remote install.  I develop all modules locally and then package them an install them on the production site.

I do NOT sync my data between the databases but I do ensure that they are similar environments.

I also develop everything locally and then install or deploy to the working website.  One of the things I do, though I don't know if it is unique or not, is I keep a working copy of all of my skins, modules and skin objects on my local system.  I use a starter kit and then add a new page for each of the different items I am working on,  I started this habit because I kept running into situations where I needed to make a small change to an item but didn't want to do it on the working site in case it created a problem.  What it means is I have to do a fair amount of work to keep up with it but, in the long run, it makes my life easier.  I have my own personal site, but at work I maintain multiple portals with several custom module and I learned the habit the hard way.

mitchel, how do you ensure  that they are in similar environments? you backup and restore or you create a new table on the host?
