Jeff - everything I have read about robots.txt says that wildcards are not recognised. How do you know that "Disallow: /*/ctl/" is working?

It seems like Google obeys it. You can put a test URL in the Google Webmaster robots.txt thingo to check. I know none of my /ctl/ pages are listed in Google's database, so I'm guessing that means it works.

Thanks Jeff. Now I investigate further it looks like several engines support wildcards:

Google: http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2005/10/21/googles-hidden-protocol/

Yahoo & MSN: http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/006620.html

Makes excluding the register and login pages very easy!
