Well...live and learn.  Throughout my upgrade process, I had been hanging on to my old default.aspx page along with its associated code behind file because I had made some modifications to it when I was running version 4.4.1.  The file seemed to work throughout my upgrade without any adverse effects so I just kept it and didn't make any comparisons to the default.aspx and code behind in the 4.5.1 and 4.5.3 versions.  I just remembered I read somewhere that the ajax script manager is loaded via the default.aspx page in these versions.  To make a long story short, I took my code changes from my default.aspx page and incorporated them into the ones from the 4.5.3 version, copied them over to my site and the error is now gone.
