am trying to install source version DNN to the web host. my understanding is that i move all the Library and Website folders to the root directory of the host and i create a virtual directory (dnn for example) to point to the Website folder. so if my domain is www.xyz.com for example, i would point my browser to http://www.xyz.com/dnn to start the installation. is this right?  does it mean i have to type http://www.xyz.com/dnn to access my website? i'd prefer using http://www.xyz.com instead of http://www.xyz.com/dnn, is there a way? thanks in advance!

First of all, I'm not sure why you are using source files on your web host - the only reason to use source files would be to run the installation with Visual Studio to modify core modules or possibly to produce modules of your own. The web host is not really a good environment for that.

Having said that - to do what you are requesting would take configuring the website folder as a virtual directory application. You should be able to do this through your web host control panel or you might have to ask your host to set this up for you. In that way a simple call to http://www.xyz.com would be automatically redirected to your site folder.

I still strongly reccommend against doing this unless you have a very good reason for it.

Good luck,

Mike

the reason i'm doing this is because i need more features from the existing user account module and plan to extend it. can i run the install package on the host and develop/extend with the souce package on my local machine?

Yes that is generally the way it's being done. I have a number of modules I develop on my local machine with source code in VS2005 and when it's working properly I just upload the new .ascx/.ascx.vb files to the website taking care to rename the originals in case something doesn't work quite right. They are then automatically recompiled when you browse to the site.

If you run into any problems - let me know.

thanks Mike. have installed the install-package DNN on the host and source package on the local machine. currently, it'd be greatly appreciated if you can help me with this problem:

i need more features from the existing User Account module such as:
- newly added Profile Properties (e.g. birth date, age) can be shown on the User Accounts Settings
- able to do an auto collation of user Profile Properties (e.g. How many users were born in 1986?)
- able to sort in an ascending or descending order

knowing that modifying a core module will create some problem when you  want to upgrading later, is there a way for me to create a new module that can extend the existing User Account module to include those features i need? this is to avoid changing the core. or you have a better advice for me? thanks!!
