I hope this is the right location for this question.

I am new to DNN and have been working with the DAL+ tutorial and eventually the CodeSmth version to set up a new module.

What I am finding is that my numeric SQL datatypes (int, float) cannot be loaded or retrieved if the fields are Null. I am receiving page load errors when inserting a new record. Similarly checkboxes do not by default load Boolean SQL datatypes.

I do not expect these to work out of the box. But I am confident that there is a prescribed method for working with these issues.

What is the solution to this problem?

What is the cleanest (best practice) to successfully implement Nullable fields?

<DataObjectMethod(DataObjectMethodType.Insert)> _
Public Shared Sub ThingsForSale_Insert(ByVal ThingsForSaleInfo As ThingsForSaleInfo)
    DataProvider.Instance().ExecuteNonQuery(
"ThingsForSale_Insert", ThingsForSaleInfo.ModuleId, GetNull(ThingsForSaleInfo.UserID), GetNull(ThingsForSaleInfo.Category.ToString), GetNull(ThingsForSaleInfo.Description.ToString), GetNull(ThingsForSaleInfo.Price))
End Sub

Private Shared Function GetNull(ByVal Field As Object) As Object
    Return
Null.GetNull(Field, DBNull.Value)
End Function

Best practice when you do this from scratch: you should transfer two parameters - first is that form was actually send by user (already supported by asp.net with event parameter) and second is request for checkbox parameter. With this combination you are always sure if checkbox is checked or not.

Primoz
