i have tried to read some of the documentaion regarding module from the site, but i personally found reading this is hard going and cannot find parts that help me to understand any futher. To be polite i found some of the reading very difficult to follow

Even though you clearly know how to program asp.net, there are some things that are specific to DotNetNuke. I recommend that you go through this 10 minute tutorial:

Super-Simple Module (DAL+) (C# and VB)

After that you may find a lot of your questions answered.

After that read:

Introduction to DotNetNuke Module Development

At this point I admit it can get a little difficult but these concepts must be understood. However, the document is not very long.  If you have any questions on that document please ask.

I think the problem is with the SQLDataSource. To see the reccomended way of connecting to the database see:

http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN_ShowMeThePages/

Dim mySqlString As New StringBuilder()
mySqlString.Append("SELECT FriendlyName, Description ")
mySqlString.Append("FROM {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}DesktopModules ")
mySqlString.Append("WHERE Description like '%' + @SearchString + '%' ")
mySqlString.Append("ORDER BY FriendlyName")
Dim myParam As SqlParameter = New SqlParameter("@SearchString", SqlDbType.VarChar, 150)
myParam.Value = SearchString
Me.GridView1.DataSource = CType(DataProvider.Instance().ExecuteSQL(mySqlString.ToString(), myParam), IDataReader)
Me.GridView1.DataBind()

Can you tell me what method does the replacement of the {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier} tokens?

Thanks

The script commands "{databaseOwner}" and "{objectQualifier}" indicate that they are to be replaced by configuration settings in the web.config file. Normally "{databaseOwner}" is set to ".dbo" and  "{objectQualifier}" is set to nothing (it would not have a setting). However, if alternate settings were indicated in the web.config file, those settings would be inserted into the script.

Which process replaces those tokens with the correct values from web.config?
